One of the important tools for turning a visitor to your website into a client, is the ability to hold their interest. Now that may go without saying but peoples attention span is not brilliant when it comes to websites. They may be initially drawn in but if the content doesn’t interest them they will leave your website pretty quickly. In some cases less likely to return.
So how can you increase the time people spend on your website. Well its not easy but can be done. Here are some methods we have found to work well for clients in the past.
- Know Your People
Knowing who you want to visit your website and where they communicating (Facebook vs Linkedin or both for example) is very important. It will give you a good starting point when it comes to telling the world that you have posted new content or you have a new product. Its a less is more approach in that you may get fewer visits but certainly greater interest. - Encourage Exploration
Having introductory paragraphs or sentences, gives visitors a snap shot of what they can explore in your website. It also encourages them to click from page to page. These introductions can be place in your email marketing, on your home page or in the side area of your website. - Reading Is Effort
Try to keep your posts and pages as short and punchy as possible. If you have a lot to say accompany the page with a pdf download. Doing this will give the visitor your message quickly. If they want to read on in more detail they can download a pdf or click through to a “Read even more” area. - Interact and Engage
Web users love content that they can interact with. Try accompany your content with video or a PowerPoint slides (have a look at Slide Share) or animation. Not only do search engines love pages with media content, people love clicking play. If you stream video from YouTube and have a channel its very easy for visitors to view multiple videos after each other.
